February in the garden is filled with anticipation. The first signs of life are beginning to emerge as the plants shake off their winter dormancy. Splashes of colour illuminate dark corners to herald the start of spring. And there is plenty of preparation to do.
Ahead of the inaugural Ascot Spring Garden Show on Friday 13th - Sunday 15th April at Ascot Racecourse, TV star David Domoney expresses his top tips in the build-up.
TEND TO YOUR GREENHOUSE:
Ventilate your greenhouse and water the plants inside. Just because your plants are in a dormant phase doesn’t mean they don’t need some fresh air and water. Greenhouse sometimes get forgotten too much at this time of year and don’t make it to spring.
LEVEL YOUR LAWN:
Now’s the time to repair any hollows or bumps in your lawn. A mixture of sand, soil and grass seed will fill holes nicely. If you haven’t got a roller, put on your wellies and stamp down level any bumps while the ground is soft and soggy.
GET YOUR BORDERS READY FOR NEW PLANTING IN SPRING:
Get your gloves on and fish out any weeds, stones, and dead plants to give you a clean canvas. Then get your fork and turn the soil. This will aerate them nicely for fresh planting and the frost will do the rest.a
