The feature race of the weekend, the Victoria Cup was won by Cape Byron and winning jockey Andrea Atzeni judged the pace perfectly to deliver victory for trainer Roger Varian and owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum. A closing three furlong sectional of 35.80 seconds held of the late challenges of Raising Sand (35.72) and Ripp Orf (35.69) who both produced a faster finish but had to come from further back. All the protagonists could return for the Royal Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot, run over a furlong further on the Wednesday.

We also saw two very smart juvenile winners in the shape of Final Song and Expressionist, both in the blue of Godolphin. Final Song opened the meeting in visually impressive fashion when winning the British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Fillies' Stakes and that was backed up by the clock. Saeed bin Suroor's newcomer covered the closing two furlongs in 23.06 seconds, a full 0.87 seconds quicker than any other horse in the race. We look forward to seeing her at the Royal Meeting in either the Queen Mary or Albany Stakes.

Expressionist was made to work harder on Saturday in the Barbados Novice Stakes but he edged out Clan Royale by three quarters of a length and both horses should have exciting futures. On the clock his overall time was quicker than Final Song, which was reflective of the drier ground, but Expressionist's time through the final two furlongs was slightly slower at 23.60 seconds. We would expect him to be a key competitor in the Coventry or Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot.
