Lil Rockerfeller stars in Coral Hurdle

The Prince’s Countryside Fund Racing Weekend & Christmas Shopping Fair concluded on Saturday 25th November as the racing action peaked with victory for Lil Rockerfeller in the feature race of the meeting, The Grade 2 Coral Hurdle.

Set in motion by a convincing eight length victory from Count Meribel in The Mitie Events & Leisure Novice’s Hurdle, the next race on the card produced the converse result as the judge could only split the winner, Toviere, from the runner up by a mere neck in the BAM Construct UK Chase.

The third race on the card saw a wide margin win from Graceful Legend as she took the Trisoft Mares’ Handicap Hurdle under Max Kendrick by five lengths.

The first Grade 2 contest was a competitive renewal of the Christy 1965 Chase where bookmaker’s favourite Top Notch claimed an impressive eight length victory beneath Nico De Boinville after a faultless round of jumping.

The pinnacle of the meeting, The Coral Hurdle, went the way of last year’s runner up Lil Rockerfeller. Jumping gamely throughout, the gelding went one better for trainer Neil King to win by a length and a half from L’Ami Serge.

The quality of the racing did not decline as The Shawbrook Handicap Steeplechase was contested by a host of experienced racecourse favourites including Sire De Grugy. Rank outsider Sir Valentino was eventually victorious under J.J Burke, continuing Burke’s successful association with Ascot this season.

A hard fought finish to the Elite AV Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race rounded off an incredibly competitive afternoon of racing, with Portrush Ted only just losing out to Nestor Park as the two horses duelled all the way to the line in the closing race of The Prince’s Countryside Fund Racing Weekend.

Racing returns to Ascot on Friday 22nd & Saturday 23rd December as we host our Christmas Racing Weekend.
