King George VI Weekend

Programme & Tickets

Friday 28th – Saturday 29th July 2017

King George VI Weekend

History, style and glory – all bywords for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (sponsored by QIPCO) day at Ascot on the final Saturday in July.

It truly is one of the racing events that must be sampled at least once in a lifetime. The feature race, after which the two-day meeting is named, commemorates Her Majesty The Queen’s parents. It is regarded as Europe’s premier midseason middle-distance championship race for horses of both sexes and all ages.

With the racecourse in full bloom under the glow of the English summer, there is a palpable English garden party atmosphere that gently permeates the fixture. Glamour is never far away; while less formal than the Royal Meeting, King George VI day has long been an important date in society’s calendar for showcasing the full repertoire and colour of summer wardrobes.

The Experience

The King George VI Weekend celebrates the best of the British summer, and is one of Ascot’s most prestigious race meetings outside of the Royal Meeting.

A summer garden party

Ascot’s premier multi-day fixture outside the Royal Meeting is a true celebration of the glorious English summer. With school finished and summer holidays either still fresh in the mind or just around the corner, the atmosphere on King George weekend is truly unique and simply has to be sampled first-hand.

Ascot’s beautifully manicured lawns and gardens are showcased at their very best during the height of the English summer, with cocktail bars and eating areas popping up all over the racecourse and its grounds. Friday is a relaxed day, perfect for office gatherings or a day out, while King George Day itself is one of the most famous single racedays in Europe.

a brief history of the 'king george'

Saturday brings with it one of the most historic and prestigious races in the world, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (sponsored by QIPCO).

Launched in 1952 as a tribute to Her Majesty The Queen’s parents, the race has long-been recognized as Europe’s premier, midseason, middle-distance race for all age groups.

It has been won in the past by numerous Royal Ascot winners, Epsom Derby winners and Prix De L’Arc de Triomphe winners, many of whom are immortalised at Ascot through bars that carry their names.
