Silviniaco Conti has his sights set on February’s Ascot Chase rather than the 32Red King George VI Chase at Kempton.
Paul Nicholls’ 10-year-old couldn’t keep pace with Cue Card and Coneygree at Haydock in Saturday’s Betfair Chase and is now being aimed at either Ascot or Aintree’s Bowl.
Having won the Coral Hurdle and Ascot Chase at Ascot in years gone by, Silviniaco Conti enjoys a trip to Berkshire and Nicholls is hoping familiar winning ground will spark his excellent servent back into winning ways.
"We are not going to run him for a little while,” Nicholls told Racing UK.
“We will just freshen him up. He had an entry in the King George, but if all the top ones turn up we would probably dodge it.
"He is not quite what he was, there is no doubt about that. He has been a wonderful horse.
"I suppose you could look at the Ascot race he won last year (Ascot Chase, February) and the Bowl at Aintree.
"We won't be flying high, but he has got enough ability and enthusiasm."
