April 2016: The world’s premier international jockeys’ competition, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, returns to Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 6th August. It will be followed by a free evening concert for racegoers featuring Ronan Keating, Gabrielle, Fun Lovin’ Criminals and Lawson.
Now in its 16th year, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is one of Ascot’s most loved race meetings. Racegoers turn out in their thousands to pledge their allegiance to one of four teams in the UK’s only team-format raceday. The teams are made up of top international jockeys seeking victory by collectively acquiring the highest number of points across the six races throughout the day.
The four teams are Great Britain & Ireland, Europe, the Rest of the World and The Girls. Four of the world’s finest jockeys will lead the teams with Frankie Dettori captaining the Europe team, Jamie Spencer leading Great Britain & Ireland, Silvestre de Sousa taking charge of the Rest of the World and Emma-Jayne Wilson looking to orchestrate a second straight victory for the Girls.
Last year saw The Girls achieve a landmark victory and lift the trophy for the first time after claiming three of the six races. This year they will be aided by the addition of Australian Michelle Payne. Payne will be making her Shergar Cup debut after becoming the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup on 100-1 shot Prince of Penzance in November last year.
Away from the track, racing will be followed by a free evening concert for racegoers featuring music from Ronan Keating, Gabrielle, Fun Lovin’ Criminals and Lawson. King Edward VII Enclosure guests will have a short priority access period allowing them to secure their preferred spot following the racing.
There will also be a fairground included in the price of a ticket on the Bandstand Lawns, as well as champagne and cocktail bars and a wide range of restaurants to enjoy before the music kicks off.
Ahead of the concert, Ronan Keating said, “It’s great to be playing at Ascot this year. It’s a fantastic line-up and I think anyone coming will be in for a treat.”
Lawson band member Andy Brown, added, “The Shergar Cup is a great event and we’re looking forward to watching the racing as much as we are to playing to show! We’ll make sure that party atmosphere continues into the evening.”
Nick Smith, Director of Racing and Communications at Ascot, said: “The jockeys riding in this year’s Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup are among the best ambassadors the sport has to offer. Amongst them is the international phenomenon which is Canada’s Emma-Jane Wilson, the perennial champion at Woodbine and Michelle Payne, who made history last year when she won the Melbourne Cup. We all wait with excitement to see which team will come out on top and whether the girls can retain their crown.”
Queen Anne Enclosure tickets from £30 in advance. King Edward VII Enclosure tickets from £55 in advance. Accompanied children under 18 years of age gain free entry at all Ascot race meetings. Concert included within the raceday ticket.
