2000 Guineas winner Galileo Gold soared to victory in the St James’s Palace Stakes under Frankie Dettori.
The Hugo Palmer trained three-year-old lead from the front to hand Dettori his 53rdRoyal Ascot winner in one of the best races of the year, let alone week.
Irish 2000 winner Awtaad beat Galileo Gold at the Curragh on soft ground so was fancied to do the same at Royal Ascot, however Dettori had too much pace from the front and beat both Awtaad and The Gurkha.
Ryan Moore had been bullish over The Gurkha’s chances in the race after his progressive form, which included the French 2000 Guineas win, but Moore couldn’t catch the leader and had to settle for third.
The scenes in the Parade Ring after the race were a sight to behold as Palmer and his team cheered home their prized asset.
Palmer claimed after the race that there is no better pilot around Ascot than Frankie Dettori and his faith appears to be bearing fruit on a regular basis.
