The world’s premier international jockeys’ competition, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, is coming to Ascot Racecourse on Saturday 8th August. It will be followed by a free evening concert for racegoers featuring Lulu, Rick Astley, Blue, Razorlight and Hayseed Dixie.
Now in its 15th year, the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is one of Ascot’s most loved race meetings. As the only team-format raceday in the UK, racegoers turn out in their thousands to pledge their allegiance to one of four teams. These are made up of top international jockeys seeking victory by collectively acquiring the highest number of points for their team through success across the six-race card.
The four teams are Great Britain & Ireland, Europe, the Rest of the World and The Girls. Four of the world’s finest jockeys will lead the teams; Frankie Dettori will captain last year’s winners (Europe), while Kerrin McEvoy of Australia will lead the Rest of the World team. Emma Jayne-Wilson, who wowed the crowd with two superb victories last year will lead The Girls who will be seeking revenge after missing out on the trophy by just one point in 2014. Finally, Jamie Spencer will take charge of the Great Britain & Ireland team with Spencer taking part in the meeting for the first time in seven years.
Away from the track, racing will be followed by a free evening concert for racegoers featuring music icons Lulu, Rick Astley, Blue, Razorlight and Hayseed Dixie. Premier Admission ticket holders will have a short priority access period allowing them to get towards the front of the stage.
There will also be a fairground (included in the price of a ticket) on the Bandstand Lawns, Champagne and cocktail bars and a wide range of restaurants to visit before the music kicks off.
Ahead of the concert, Lulu said, “I’m thrilled to be playing Ascot this year as there is so much going on both on and off the track. I’m honoured to be part of this brilliant line-up and I think anyone coming will be in for a treat.”
Rick Astley said, “I can’t wait to play at Ascot. It’s such a prestigious venue with amazing history. There will be something there for everyone and I’m sure the atmosphere will be fantastic.”
Blue said, “We are looking forward to being back at Ascot this year bringing our own slice of summer fun, so join us there for something old, something new and always something Blue"
Razorlight, who will be joining Lulu, Rick Astley and Blue on stage added, “We are very excited about gigging at Ascot. We love playing at new venues and we’re hoping the audience will get involved and sing along.”
Hayseed Dixie, who will be rounding up the evening said, “With Us, Rick Astley and Lulu on the bill, you won't even remember there was a horse race by the time we're done with you!!!"
Nick Smith, Head of Communications and International Racing at Ascot, said:
“The jockeys riding in this year’s Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup are among the best ambassadors the sport has to offer. Amongst them is the international phenomenon which is Canada’s Emma-Jane Wilson, the perennial champion at Woodbine. We all wait with excitement to see if Emma-Jayne can become the first female jockey to secure the top riders position at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup this year and to see which team will come out on top.”
