In addition to initiatives like the Global Sprint Challenge, which has seen sprinters compete in Ascot's races from the USA, Hong Kong, Japan, Australia and from all over Europe, encouraging the best horses from all around the world to run in the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes remains a high priority.

Hard Buck finished second in the 2004 King George for the USA and this year, Japanese superstar Heart's Cry finished third in a pulsating finish, just a length behind the world's top rated horse and unofficial world champion, the pride of France, Hurricane Run. Dubai World Cup winner Electrocutionist split the pair. Although there were only six runners, the quality of the race was almost immediately underlined when Cherry Mix, sixth of the six, landed a Group One race in Germany on his next start in August.

Such was the anticipation and excitement surrounding the participation of Heart's Cry, that there were some 100 Japanese media present at the King George in July, and the race was shown live in Japan in front of an estimated audience of 10,000,000 people, in spite of the local start time of midnight.

The Prince of Wales's Stakes is Royal Ascot's premier race and in 2005 Elvstroem ran a great race for Australia, finishing third to subsequent King George winner Azamour.
