Race 2 - Listed Indore Pears Diamond Winkfield Stakes
Satulagi Bounces Back
Satulagi showed no ill-effects for her run in last Saturdays Weatherbys Super Sprint when she recorded a decisive one and a half length success in the Listed Indore Pears Diamond Winkfield Stakes.
The two-year-old Officer filly is trained by Stan Moore and was partnered to success bv John Egan.
A delighted Stan Moore said of the 10/1 winner: There was a lot of rain before racing at Newbury last week and the ground was on the slow side, which she does not like. She finished ninth, but still ran a good race and I think if the ground had been quick, she might have finished fourth. She ran a cracking race in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot and she has been crying out for seven furlongs. I thought John may have gone a bit too soon and he said she just idled a bit in front.
Looking to the future, Moore is considering a step up in class to Group Two level: She could run in the Lowther Stakes at York next month, if the ground is quick. She is really tough. Moore moved to his current base at Uplands, Lambourn, on the ominous date of Friday, January 13, but is delighted with the way things have gone: Thats our second Listed winner since we have been at Uplands and we will take over fully at the yard on September 1. I am grateful for the support I have received from Mr & Mrs Hay (owners of Uplands & Satulagi) and we have some excellent facilities. Around 75% of our horses will be two-year-olds and we will have the odd jumper over the winter.
The Mick Channon-trained Pires, ridden by Ted Durcan, ran his usual honest race in finishing a length and a half runner-up to Satulagi in the seven-furlong contest. Channon reported: I am chuffed with that effort. He is very consistent and we have had a lot of fun with him. He is had a lot of racing already and I think he will be a nice horse later on, so Ill try to give him a break for now."
Richard Hannon, successful in the first race, saddled third-placed Norisan, who set the pace under Richard Hughes and ultimately failed by only a short-head to take second place. Hannon commented: His problem was he hit the gate too good and cut out the donkey work for the others, but there is nothing Richard (Hughes) could do about that.
The horse was always travelling well within himself but was doing it the hard way. I think he could be a better horse coming at them from behind. He is by Inchinor and Richard says a little bit of juice in the ground might help him.
