Friday 26 September : The Ascot Festival - 2nd Annual Beer Festival
Racing Summary
Friday 26th September is the first of a three day meeting at Ascot. The feature race is the £250,000 Watership Down Stud Sales race for two year olds – which always attracts a huge field. This race is for two year olds fillies sold or bought in as yearlings under the hammer at any specified sale in the United Kingdom.
Entertainment Summary
This is the start of the second Annual Beer Festival in association with CAMRA and Fuller’s; expect more than just exciting racing at this extensive regional Beer Festival.
We are showcasing a huge variety of over 130 beers, perries and ciders including Summer Lightening from Hop Back Brewery as it returns to defend its title of the Ascot Racecourse Beer of the Festival. This prestigious title is awarded by racegoers across the weekend so competition in 2008 will be fierce.
Between racing customers will be serenaded by an English folk band as they enjoy the festival. Each voucher is purchased for just £1.25 on the day. Vouchers can be redeemed against a half pint sample of any chosen beverage.
National Stud
The National Stud will have an exhibition stand at the racecourse throughout the September Festival. The National Stud is the showcase for British Thoroughbred breeding. It comprises over 500 acres of prime pastureland on the edge of Newmarket, headquarters of racing in the UK. It is home to 5 Group 1 winning stallions (Bahamian Bounty, Cockney Rebel, Pastoral Pursuits, Phoenix Reach and Val Royal) and can accommodate up to 200 mares in nine separate yards.
The National Stud is the only Thoroughbred Stud Farm in the UK open to the public. Tours which take place daily from 1st March to 30th September, and on Newmarket's Autumn Race Days, allow the general public to have a behind-the-scenes look at a top-class stud farm. Visitors are able to see the stallions, mares and foals and meet racing heroes Amberleigh House and Sergeant Cecil.
The recent growth of the racing and breeding industry has resulted in an increased need for qualified, industry-trained staff. The Education & Training Programmes at The National Stud combine practical, hands-on training with academic tuition; a combination not available anywhere else in the UK.
Visit the stand throughout the weekend for more details on the National Stud and its education programmes. There will also be competitions run throughout the day to win a visit to the National Stud itself.
