The Redevelopment Programme
View of the stand from the Parade Ring.Ascot Racecourse is synonymous with quality, style and excellence in providing unparalleled racing and a memorable day out, as such it was essential with the redevelopment of the grandstand that the design was something so spectacular that it could take its place in the distinguished history of this extraordinary racecourse.

The redevelopment had to be a modern icon that complemented and reflected the past combined with the highest specifications, using the latest technology to offer racegoers an unrivalled raceday experience.

Ascot Racecourse closed in September 2004 for a major redevelopment. The focal point of the redevelopment is undoubtedly the new Grandstand itself. The distinctive design is defined by the spectacular parasol roof suspended on ‘structural trees’. The stand is flooded with natural light, using glass and aluminium materials, bringing the outside in as you walk through the impressive galleria. The new Grandstand with its state-of-the-art facilities, is second to none. The racecourse track has also been redeveloped and Ascot is proud to host racing in 2006 on a world class racing surface.

The new Grandstand was designed by HOK Sport Architecture whose portfolio also includes designing the Millennium Stadium, the Sydney Olympic Stadium and Wembley. Ascot Racecourse sets a new standard for the way that people will go racing in the UK. The Grandstand will provide a much more open approach to racegoing and will be viewed not only as a leading racecourse on the international stage, but as a world-class sport and entertainment venue to take us into the new Millennium.

As part of the redevelopment process the racetracks have been shifted 42m north, into Ascot Heath. This has caused the golf course to be relocated to improve the facilities over the other side of Winkfield Road. We have also expanded the Parade Ring to allow viewing for 8,000 customers, which is the largest in any racecourse.

Winkfield Underpass. The development of the Ascot track is the result of considerable research and application over the last five years. The new straight mile surface, the eradication of the major crossings and integration of a new state of the art irrigation system throughout are huge advances for Ascot. Ascot has a world class racing surface.

The track itself has been radically improved with a completely new straight mile course coupled with extensive remedial work on the round course. This work has allowed Ascot to eradicate the road crossings on the Winkfield Road and at Holloway’s Crossing.

The official opening of the racecourse took place on the first day of the Royal Meeting Tuesday 20th June 2006 with an opening speech from Her Majesty The Queen.
